IF a nuclear war was to break out with Russia, Fermanagh and Tyrone could end up right in the thick of it, with Fivemiletown revealed to be on a list of potential strike targets.
It has been reported that former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Rogozin has shared a map marking more than 20 potential military-related targets in the UK that his country could strike. The terrifying list comes amid continued tensions between the UK and Russia, particularly in relation to the war in Ukraine.
Fivemiletown has been included on the list as it is home to Cooneen Group, a textile factory that makes military and police uniforms. It is one of only two locations in the North on the list, the other being Belfast, which is home to companies such as Spirit Aerosystems and Harland and Wolff.
Councillor Victor Warrington, who represents the area, said the list was ‘scary.’
“It’s unsettling to know the Russians are even aware of Fivemiletown, which would be tiny on their scale,” he said. “It’s a very scary list. If Fivemiletown was targeted in a strike, it wouldn’t just be localised in that one area, it would have very far-reaching consequences.”
