THE owners of Fermanagh’s leading timber manufacturer Balcas has officially opened a new multi-million pound facility in Scotland as the company continues to go from strength to strength.
In October 2021, Glennon Brothers successfully took over Balcas and they invested significant funding into the Fermanagh-based company to help the business expand and develop.
It was recently confirmed that Glennon Brothers has opened an £18 million new timber frame construction facility in North Ayrshire in Scotland, opened by First Minister, John Swinney.
The opening of the new site in Scotland is another positive sign for Fermanagh firm Balcas which reported a major pre-tax profit of £21.85 million in 2023, with a huge turnover of £137.2 million.
The Enniskillen site, located on the Killadeas Road, processes around 600,000 tonne with 55 per-cent of the raw material coming from trees that have been harvested from local forests.
Sustainability is key at Balcas. Its adds value to the co-products which come from the sawmill processes, sawdust, wood chip and bark which come with producing square timber from logs.
Consisting of 78-acres of land across its Enniskillen site, Balcas operates multiple plants and relies on energy it generates from its sawmill co-products to produce electricity and heat.
Joint Managing Director of Glennon Brothers, Mike Glennon, welcomed the news for the firm.
“This is a very proud day for our company. We’ve always believed in the potential of Scottish timber and in the skilled people who make this industry thrive,” explained Mr Glennon.
Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, also congratulated the leading firm which continues to play a vital role in the running of Balcas in Fermanagh, which supports the local community.
“This facility brings together sustainable construction, advanced manufacturing and regional economic development,” Mr Swinney said.
“It is an excellent example of the kind of economic opportunities that can exist that can help both grow our county’s economy whilst tackling the climate emergency.”
