A LOCAL man has praised the community for their support and generosity after he held a fundraising charity night to raise money to purchase chair beds for the South West Acute Hospital.
Irvinestown man Marcus Corrigan raised over £6,000 from a ‘Night at the Races’ at Charlie’s Bar in Enniskillen, with the money buying five new chair beds to provide comfort for local families.
Mr Corrigan’s father, Joe, passed away in July 2023 following a battle with illness.
During his time in the hospital, the St Michael’s College employee decided he wanted to raise money for the SWAH, purchasing beds to help families and relatives during their hospital stays.
“They’re a fold-up chair that you can sit on during the day and fold out at night for sleeping on. They have wheels and you can roll them out. They’re a great job,” Mr Corrigan told the ‘Herald.
“There are five families now that will hopefully help them when they’re staying with their relatives.
“Hopefully now they won’t have to sleep on the floor or in a chair. The staff really made sure I was comfortable with blankets and pillows, and hopefully these chairs will be a good benefit to many.”
Mr Corrigan is a member of the local Manchester United Supporters Club.
A number of jerseys were auctioned on the night including a signed Liverpool jersey from Conor Bradley, a Man United top from Bruno Fernandes and a jersey from Celtic’s Lukasz Zaluska.
Fermanagh and Tyrone GAA jerseys were donated by Josh Largo Elis and Peter Teague, while local men Micheál Glynn and Darragh McBrien sponsored Larne and Linfield jerseys.
Fermanagh darts star Brendan Dolan also donated a shirt and a signed scarf for the auction.
