Boost for Tyrone and Fermanagh mental health units

MENTAL health units at Tyrone and Fermanagh (T&F) Hospital has received almost £500,000 in funding aimed at improving safety and facilities for inpatients – but concerns remain over delays to a long-promised new mental health unit in Omagh.

The funding, confirmed in a letter sent by Health Minister Mike Nesbitt and discussed at a recent meeting of the Fermanagh and Omagh Community Planning Strategic Partnership Board, has been used primarily for environmental and safety upgrades at the hospital site.

According to the Western Health Trust, the investment was confirmed in June 2024 as part of a capital funding package for mental health services.

Elm and Lime Villas received £235,000 – with £200,000 earmarked for two new accessible ensuite bathrooms, and £35,000 for environmental works including anti-ligature curtain rails, secure TV cabinets and new furniture.

In response to safety concerns, £200,000 was set aside to replace the perimeter fencing with an anti-ligature design.
