FORMER St Michael’s College MacRory Cup winning goalkeeper Paddy Sweeney said it was “incredibly satisfying” as he played a key role in UCD’s historic American Football Shamrock Bowl win.
The Belcoo man, who led the Enniskillen school to the Ulster title back in 2012, recently lined out for University College Dublin when they won the top prize in American Football in Ireland.
Sweeney’s UCD side beat Dublin Rebels 36-14 in American Football Shamrock Bowl Final, which was played in front of a large crowd at Dunbarry Park in Athlone.
“The growth of the club since I’ve joined in 2017 has been absolutely meteoric and is down to the quality of people around the club, and their drive to see the team grow,” posted the Belcoo man on social media.
“From winning our first ever semi-final in 2022, to ending the 2024 season with two National Championships.
“It has been incredibly satisfying to see the success that some of the long standing stalwarts of the club have enjoyed recently, given the hardship they went through to keep the club alive in its formative years.
The former St Michael’s College student, who works as an Environmental and Sustainability Coordinator at ESB Networks, has combined his playing duties as club president with University College Dublin.
“This one was particularly sweet as it was my first medal as both a player and club president, rather than watching from the sidelines in 2022,” added Sweeney.
