‘Enniskillen needs a Primark’ is the overwhelming view of Fermanagh Herald readers on Facebook.
Recently, the Herald covered multiple stories about vacant buildings in Enniskillen town centre and Primark was the top suggestion to revive the shopping scene. Currently, people from Fermanagh are travelling to Omagh, Derry or Sligo to visit the fashion giant, but it is believed that Primark currently has no plans to open a new store in Fermanagh.
The Omagh Primark store opened in 2015 and it is believed it employs over 100 people, and since opening, the store has welcomed thousands of customers, many from Fermanagh.
Omagh Councillor Anne Marie Fitzgerald believes that Primark has been an extremely positive addition to the town. “Even from the minute that word got out before the shop opened, there was great excitement and a buzz around the town. It is something that the people from Omagh had went to Derry or Letterkenny for on a days shopping. It has definitely brought extra people to the town and there is a lot of people who would come across the border to Primark.
“ I have met people from different areas like Cookstown and Dungannon so it has been very positive.”
If Primark was to open in Enniskillen, it is thought that it would increase footfall for other stores in the town centre, similar to Omagh.
Cllr Fitzgerald continued, “We are delighted to have Primark in Omagh. It has also increased footfall for other local shops and businesses in the town. If it is not available in your area, you will travel to it and wander around the town so it is very positive.”
Primark has been contacted but had not responded at the time of going to press. When previously asked about the possibility of opening a store here, they said, “Primark does not comment on speculation or plans regarding new store openings.”
