THE chief executive of the Council is set to retire at the end of the month.
Brendan Hegarty, who is believed to be in his late 50s, has been chief executive of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council since its establishment in 2014.
Mr Hegarty was appointed to lead the transition under local government reform to establish the new Council, but prior to this, he was chief executive of Fermanagh District Council from 2010 to 2014.
Mr Hegarty first joined local government in 1990 when he began employment with the former Omagh District Council.
Before this Mr Hegarty worked as an accountant.
Speaking of Mr Hegarty’s retirement, chairwoman of the Council, Cllr Siobhan Currie, said, “Brendan has had an outstanding career in local government which culminated in his appointment as chief executive of the Council. In this role he led on the establishment of the Council, bringing it through a stage of transition and preparing it for the next stage of transformation, which now lies ahead. As the Council approaches the year 2020, it is one of ambition, committed to improving the quality of life of our residents and enhancing our economy and environment in a sustainable way.
“Brendan’s unending commitment and dedication to effective governance has ensured the Council is on a very strong footing as it now progresses into and through a stage of transformation.
On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council I would like to thank Brendan for his many years of public service and would like to wish him well on his retirement.”
Speaking on behalf of Council employees, Ms Alison McCullagh, deputy chief executive, said,
“Brendan’s colleagues are sad to see him leave the Council and will remember him as someone who was hardworking and committed to his role but who always made time to take an interest in staff and their families. We would like to extend our very best regards to Brendan for his retirement.”
