Work to go ahead on main road despite objections

The planned four month long closure of the main Lisnaskea to Maguiresbridge road is to go ahead, despite objections from local people.
A meeting took place last Tuesday April 16th where local residents and Lisnaskea business people raised concerns they had regarding the scheme, but the Department for Infrastructure has said the work will proceed as planned.
The road, which is used daily by thousands of commuters who travel from Lisnaskea, Newtownbutler, Roslea and Donagh to Enniskillen for work, will be closed for almost four months to facilitate the repair of a bridge on the Lisnagole Road.
One lane of the road will be closed from April 29th, followed by a full road closure from May 6th until August 31st.
The news of the closure angered local people as the works will result in major traffic disruption for commuters and haulage companies who will be forced to use the diversion via the Nutfield Road and the A4 Belfast Road for through traffic.
Several businesses in the Lisnaskea Business Complex are opposed to the works proceeding during the spring/summer period and a business owner has claimed that it will most likely lead to the closure of their businesses along with the loss of jobs and livelihoods for families throughout the area.
The Department has claimed that Majors Bridge, on the A34 Lisnagole Road near Lisnaskea, is a masonry arch structure which has been in poor condition for a number of years and recent deterioration has brought it the point where it needs to be immediately replaced.
The scheme is set to cost around £350,000.
A Departmental spokesperson said, “The Department has given careful consideration to the issues raised, however, having taken into account all the factors including the condition of and safety issues associated with the bridge, the benefit of working with longer daylight hours over the summer months and the need to programme other schemes in the Lisnaskea area later in the year, we have decided that the best option is to proceed as planned. The Department apologises for any inconvenience caused, however, we will ensure that this essential work is completed as quickly as possible and access to businesses is maintained at all times.”
