Warning after elderly woman tells of scam scare

SCam

AN ELDERLY widow from Enniskillen has spoke out after receiving a number of scam calls from people claiming to be from BT.
Recently, there has been a spate of scams targeting people in Fermanagh, and an Enniskillen woman has told of how she received multiple calls from men claiming to be from BT and offering to fix her computer.
The woman who wished not to named explained: “I got a call one day last week from someone claiming to be from BT, and they said that there was something wrong with my Internet.
“To tell the truth, my wifi had been playing up last week so at the start I thought it was genuine, but then they asked if they could around and fix my computer but I don’t even have a computer so I realised then that it wasn’t actually BT. They rang again on Monday, and tried to tell me the same thing but I hung up the phone on them.
“I took down the numbers and they were 01257134378 and 0134688839.”
A PSNI spokesman said that they have received numerous complaints from people in Fermanagh about cold callers, and have advised, “If demands of money are made inconsistent with the work done, do not be afraid to contact us. Sometimes people are fearful that if they do not concede to the pressures and demands that they could be in trouble with us.
“Watch out for your elderly neighbours particularly if you see vans arriving at the house. And never be pressured into an ‘offer only for today while we’re in the area’. If the caller is genuine they will leave you to consider their offer and not pressurise you into a quick decision.”
