THE COUNCIL has released a statement following speculation that the Ardhowen Theatre is at risk of being sold.
Earlier this month, the Herald reported public concerns that the Ardhowen site could be sold off by the Council to a private developer and the theatre moved elsewhere.
The Herald learned that a small, unpublicised meeting was held between an officer of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and frequent users of the theatre on August 22nd.
At that meeting it was stated the theatre’s roof was leaking and the building was in need of repair.
Those who attended the meeting said they were told the building may need to be closed for a year to make these repairs, and five options were given for its future.
The first was to do nothing, the second was to refurbish the building, the third was refurbishment with an extension, and the fourth was a new building on the same site.
The fifth suggestion by the Council officer was to build a new theatre on a new site.
Following this, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has said that they ‘wish to make clear it has no plans to sell the Ardhowen site as has been suggested in some commentary.’
A spokesman said, “The Ardhowen Theatre in Enniskillen is over thirty years old.
“The building is currently in need of repair and upgrade.
“A section of the roof is leaking, the electrical wiring needs upgraded, accessibility to the venue for people with additional needs is limited, and car parking at the venue remains an issue.
“It is therefore timely to begin a process to consider how best to develop and enhance theatre provision within the Fermanagh area to best meet the needs of all those with an interest in the Ardhowen including its patrons, hirers and ratepayers.”
The Council also states that any significant investment must undergo a rigorous Economic Appraisal to achieve best value for money and ensure accountability of the proposed spend.
The statement goes on to say: “Council officers held a meeting with the Ardhowen’s key stakeholders and hirers in late August this year to make them aware of the need for maintenance works to the venue and that the Council may need to make alternative arrangements for performances during any such works.”
