A 27-year-old woman appeared before Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday charged with failing to pay an Enniskillen hotel bill from three years ago.
Christine Coulter, a mother of two from Drumcree Place, Newtownabbey in Co. Antrim, was charged with making off from the Killyhevlin Hotel on 13th February 2015.
The court heard that Coulter and her then-boyfriend had booked into the hotel for an overnight stay for Valentine’s Day. They had reserved the room on the Booking.com website at a rate of £70 per person but had left the hotel without settling the £140 bill.
The hotel had made several unsuccessful attempts to reclaim the money using the debit card details provided by Coulter at the time of making the reservation.
This had been followed up by letters and phonecalls to the defendant’s address but these were unanswered.
When police were eventually called to Coulter’s address she admitted staying at the hotel on the date in question but said she believed that her partner at the time had paid for the room.
The court also heard that the defendant had paid for dinner that night in the hotel but thought that her boyfriend had settled the accommodation bill in cash.
District Judge Nigel Broderick ordered that Coulter pay £140 compensation to the Killyhevlin in lieu of lost revenue and also imposed a £150 fine.
