UPDATE: Council sorry for Cuilcagh car park closure

Cuilcagh Mountain

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has issued an apology for any inconvenience caused by the closure of the carpark leading to the Cuilcagh Mountain Boardwalk.

The access closure at around 11am this morning comes right at the height of the tourist season and follows a land dispute.

Cuilcagh Boardwalk has become an Internet sensation with people travelling from all over the country to undertake the 7.4km scenic climb.

Access to the boardwalk was only available through privately owned land and caters for around 40 cars despite the huge volumes of traffic attempting to access the site. The council, which manages the site, have been working with various departments and agencies, such as Transport NI, the PSNI, and DAERA, as well as local landowners, to come up with solutions to the problem.

However in a statement this morning, a spokesman for the Marble Arch Caves Geopark said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, the car park at the beginning of Cuilcagh Legnabrocky Trail (Cuilcagh Boardwalk) is CLOSED until further notice. Please check back for updates. We apologise for the inconvenience to all our visitors and locals.”

This evening the council advised visitors to Cuilcagh Mountain to use the Killykeegan Nature Reserve car park in the first instance. The car park is located approximately half a mile west from the mountain path entrance.

Limited car parking may also be available on the entrance road to the Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre or at the Visitor Centre car park.

A spokesman added: “The car park at the entrance to the Cuilcagh Mountain path is temporarily closed. Fermanagh and Omagh District Council apologises for any inconvenience. The Cuilcagh Mountain Boardwalk remains open to the public.”
