INSPIRATIONAL MOTHER of four, Sinead Hogan from Newtownbutler, is among 36 ‘supermums’ from across the North who have been selected as finalists in this year’s SuperValu SuperMums competition at Stormont later this month.

Sinead was nominated by her niece, Demi O’Shea and it is just reward for her tireless charity work and care of her disabled daughter.

Sinead’s second child, Dearbhail (19) was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy and last year the   family fundraised to buy a special double bed priced at almost £4,000 as the NHS would not fund it as Dearbhail was an adult. Through Sinead and her family they have not let Derbhail’s condition affect her life. Speaking to the Herald Sinead explained more about her daughter’s restrictive movement lifestyle.

“She has a rare form of MD called laminopathy, and there is no other child in Ireland with the same condition, so we have been going to London every six months to Great Ormond Street Hospital for treatment.

“She has had this condition since birth, although she could walk till she was 10 when her condition got worse. She underwent spinal surgery in 2007 which was life-changing.” Since then, Dearbhail has been a wheelchair user and is a popular pupil at St Comhghall’s, College, Lisnaskea as well as at her local youth club.

“Her condition does interfere with her studies but, while her health has a big impact on her life, her school life is important, socially.
She is very sociable and she has a great bunch of friends at school, boys and girls.”

Like her daughter and despite her challenges, her mum, Sinead is filled with fun and happiness. She fundraises for a number of charities and has a zest for life that she instils this into her children and everyone she meets.
The 36 were chosen from over 300 nominees.

The grand final, on Wednesday, 30 September, will be hosted by TV presenter, Claire McCollum. The winner’s prize is a family trip to Disneyland in Paris and each finalist will receive a pamper hamper.
