A NEW school for Devenish College on the Tempo Road in Enniskillen is set to be complete by November 2018, with enabling works on the site underway.
The school was initially promised a new build over ten years ago, with a site purchased, but problems in funding curtailed the project.
This week an Education Authority spokesman confirmed work is progressing on the new £23m school.
“The Education Authority is progressing the new build school for Devenish College following Department of Education approval on 5 December 2014 to progress the scheme to appoint consultants to work with Devenish College to design a school which will provide a modern place of learning and teaching for the future pupils of Devenish College.
“The procurement process for the appointment of consultants (an Integrated Design Team) is in the final assessment stage.
“Deane Public Works, Enniskillen, will commence site enabling works this week to facilitate the construction of a new school.
The current timeline for the College would see a completed new build school in November 2018.”
The site enabling works will include the removal of the drumlin at the site and the filling in of a drain.
Education Minister John O’Dowd recently confirmed that the business case approved had been approved for the £23.2m new build and the procurement of design team was anticipated by end of this month, August 2015.
Chairman of Devenish College Board of Governors Alex Baird is pleased that work the school is developing.
“I would certainly welcome that. We have been expecting that. All the ducks seem to be in a row, the planning permission’s approved so it seems we will be under way in the next few weeks and we all welcome that. It’s another indicator that contrary to the views of some the work will progress.”
