NOW in its third year, the Michaela Camp has been going from strength to strength inspiring young girls to ‘lead a life without limits’. The camp, which started on Monday, is held again at St Fanchea’s College, Enniskillen.
The summer camp was set in memory of Michaela (nee Harte) McAreavey and was established to share the values and beliefs of her life through five elements.
These include fashion, fun, failte and well-being.
The 79 ‘campettes’ aged from 11 to 13, along with 27 volunteers will form new friendships and leave with a new-found confidence.
Marcella Scollan, who is the head camp coordinator, explained: “This year’s theme is the tree as it shows how the girls have grown throughout their experience in the camp.
“The girls will learn everything form confidence to new skills, everything is going for them, there’s little girls who are so quiet at the start of the week but by the end are a lot more chatty. It’s kind of an intense week and it helps them and we encourage them too so it’s a learning experience for us all.
“I get to oversee everything I and the team have put into place and watch it unfold. It starts off on a page and then grows in front of you, it’s definitely worthwhile.
“People talk about the camp all throughout the year and there’s such a build-up to it, everyone gets excited about. We have been lucky in Fermanagh because the demand for the camp has been so high, we could do two weeks and still go on.
“Faith was one of the things that was central to Michaela’s life and she is talked about a lot within that element, it’s brings to mind the ethics she followed too.”
