A NEW COMMUNITY CENTRE in the West End of Enniskillen is no closer to being built after the council agreed to extend the lease on temporary premises on the Sligo Road.
Planning permission has been obtained for a new community centre to be built in the Windmill Road area of Enniskillen, but last year this was met with strong local opposition, with a petition against the community hall project garnering over 200 signatures.
Many of the residents within the west Enniskillen community are elderly and they expressed concern that the quiet area would become susceptible to a rise in petty crime.
As part of moving towards a new community centre Fermanagh District Council originally agreed to lease premises on the Sligo Road on April 1 2011 for a period of two years to provide a community facility in the area, funded by the Department of Social Development (DSD) through the Neighbourhood Renewal Scheme.
The lease on the premises was subsequently extended for a further two year period, expiring on March 31 2015 with 100% funding again provided through the Neighbourhood Renewal Scheme.
The Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is seeking to provide a permanent community facility in the West End of Enniskillen at the Windmill Road, for which planning permission has been obtained, however funding for construction of the permanent venue has not yet been forthcoming.
At last week’s meeting of the policy and resources committee of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council it was proposed and agreed to extend the lease of the existing building.
In the meeting papers it was said the decision would have a positive impact on those within the community and would help to build good relations.
