Beauty Blog: Self-indulgence is a bargain at The Salon

A TRIP to the beauticians or hairdressers is one I often look forward to, whether it’s a colour touch-up or a facial, an hour or two of self-indulgence always eases the stresses and strains of daily life.

But it can be an expensive treat and for me it doesn’t happen as often as I would prefer.
I’m always willing to trying out new places, particularly those who offer good deals and I’ve recently discovered one of the cheapest beauty and hair salons around which is on my doorstep, both at home and work.

The South West College’s hair and beauty students offer a wide range of treatments for discounted prices at their Enniskillen-based open shop.

Named The Salon, it offers a vast amount of treatments found in industry-led hairdressers and beauty salons.

All of the junior and senior trainees are supervised by experienced tutors who are on-hand to ensure all treatments are carried out professionally and safely.

The hair salon can hold up to 16 clients at any one time while the beauty department can assist between 14 to 16 clients, depending on the number of students available.

Olivia Donaghy, who has been the curriculum manager at South West College hair and beauty department for the last ten years, gave me a tour of the third floor salon which covers four large rooms filled with the latest beauty and hairdressing equipment.

The students are busy preparing and training for the opening of The Salon in the first week of November where all their newly acquired skills will be put to the test.
Some of the services provided include facials, hotstones, micro-dermabrasion, massage, tanning, colours and cuts and most cost just a third compared to main street salons.

“The trainees also do holistic treatments from reflexology – which takes place in evenings in February – to anti-ageing and electrical facials,” Olivia explained.

“Micro-dermabrasion is very popular as it improves appearance and helps to reduce fine lines and scars. Anything that is done in the industry, from cuts to colour corrections and manicures to waxing is carried out in the salon.”

Beauty trainees Nicole Briggs, Sinead Timoney, (both 17) and Leona McCaffrey, (19) called for more people try out their services.

“There’s a very good range of treatments and it could be combined with other services,” Nicole said.

“People could make a day out of it, they could come in and get their hair done and a few beauty treatments and the restaurant upstairs is open too.

“People like to come here because it’s much more expensive to go in to the shops. Hot stones could cost £70 in some places, but our clients pay £12. They understand that we are training and it really helps with our assessments.

“Clients get the same treatments but pay a lot less. It’s good fun, we are professionals, it’s local and it’s not hard to get an appointment.”
The Salon also offers group packages and to book an appointment contact 6634 2229 for beauty and 6634 2287 for hair.

The students will be taking part in a charity event on Wednesday 3, December where they are offering taster sessions and all money raised will go to charity
