Sinn Fein is opposing the welfare cuts in the North because they believe they are attacking the most vulnerable members of society.

Speaking at Saturday’s event Enniskillen councillor Debbie Coyle said she was totally opposed to the cuts.

“They are designed to attack the working class, the disabled and the unemployed. Women have already contacted me privately via text message and social media voicing their intentions to sign the petition.”

She explained that, due to lack of transport, lack of childcare or illnesses, these women were  house bound and had asked her to bring the petition to them.

Fermanagh South Tyrone MP, Michelle Gildernew said no one in the north of Ireland had voted for the cuts.

She added: “No one in the north of Ireland voted for those Tory politicians who are driving this agenda. Given the evidence of the negative affect of these cuts in Britain, this is not a theoretical debate.

“The effects of these Tory welfare cuts will cause serious hardship to the people we represent from all communities and we will continue to oppose them.”

The party has urged people to continue to sign the petition, in the hope it will stop the proposed reform bill coming to pass.
