A 24-year-old man has been jailed after he called a security officer in Erneside Shopping Centre a “toothless c**t, pervert and a paedophile” during an abusive attack on staff.
Garry Russell Edward McMullan launched a litany of abuse at staff in which he also made references about the ‘RA’.
McMullan, who has an address as Hillman Street, Antrim Road, is currently serving a sentence in Maghaberry prison for a string of thefts in Enniskillen earlier this year.
A prosecutor explained to the court that on January 20 this year, police were called to Erneside Shopping Centre following a report of disorderly behaviour from security staff.
The police were told that a number of parties were involved in an incident including the defendant.
The court heard how McMullan had been walking up and down through the centre and as he walked towards the exit and past the security staff he stuck his middle finger up at them and shouted: “F**k off back home, you English w**ker.”
He then shouted at a staff member: “You’re a pervert and a paedophile. Up the Provos and up the RA.”
McMullan continued to launch a tirade of abuse at the staff and became aggressive.
He was later arrested and questioned over the incident and admitted being in the shopping centre.
He also admitted making gestures at staff, calling one of them a “toothless c**t,” “pervert and a paedophile”.
McMullan told officers this was a reaction to claims that a security staff member had been filming the two women he was with and had been angry at the time.
While the defendant admitted to these accusations he denied making any references to the ‘RA’.
Defence solicitor for the case claimed that McMullan was “extremely apologetic about the incident”.
She continued: “He came to Enniskillen under difficult circumstances and he had been smoking cannabis every day.
“During his time spent in custody he had been taking anger management classes and he wants to behave in a more appropriate manner in the community.”
District Judge Nigel Broderick described the incident as serious adding that the custody threshold had been crossed.
He was due to be released from prison in August but was handed a one month prison sentence to run consecutively with his current sentence.
The accused was released on his own bail of £500 to appeal the sentence.
