Mobile phone customers here ‘being ‘sold a pup’

Fermanagh mobile phone customers continue to be ‘sold a pup’ in regards to the service they receive from networks. That’s the view of local councillor Bernice Swift who has criticised the mobile phone networks for not supplying a full and proper service.

“It’s logical that if we are constantly without service to make calls or send and receive texts we should be able to terminate any phone contracts for non-performance.

“According to consumer rights group Which, it is clearly stated that under the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982, ‘a service provider must provide the contracted service with reasonable care and skill’.

Councillor Swift continued:

“Fermanagh mobile phone customers continue to be sold a pup when buying phones that clearly do not provide proper signal and coverage. None of the providers care if the mobile signal strength in our particular area isn’t the best, because they’re making a sale and that’s it, we have to suffer no bars for signal.

“Pay-as-you-go customers don’t suffer a contractual issue as they can easily switch to another network, all be it as a cost and issues for retaining there existing number, but for contract customers things are a lot more complicated when attempting to terminate contracts.”

The Independent councillor is now looking into the issue where providers are legally obliged to deliver mobile signal and the resulting issue of customers who wish to cancel mobile phone contracts due to a failed service and poor mobile signal

“If enough Fermanagh citizens vote with their feet by highlighting this pertinent right to a mobile service I suspect providers will not want to be liable for possible compensation, this should put more pressure to provide the service we pay for.”
