ANN Gormley – the former chairman of Omagh District Council – is set to make a return to electoral politics in a bid claim a seat for the Alliance Party in Enniskillen.
If elected she would become the first ever member of the party to be elected to council in Fermanagh.
Ann is familiar with the community in Enniskillen from her time as a former pupil of Mount Lourdes Grammar School in the town and also through her work as a dental therapist for the Sperrin Lakeland Trust for 27 years.
On announcing her candidacy for the 2014 Shadow Council elections Ann stated she is looking forward to the challenge:
“I want to offer the Enniskillen, Lisbellaw and Lisnarick communities an alternative to tribal voting, not based on religious or sectarian sentiment.”
The Alliance candidate told the Herald she was ‘not concerned at all’ that no previous party candidate had ever gained a seat in Fermanagh, but rather saw it as an opportunity.
“There are a lot of Alliance voters in Fermanagh and I’m giving them an opportunity to go out and vote. There’s also a huge percentage who don’t vote and this is another option for them. I’m fully confident of getting votes and hopeful of getting elected.”
If elected Ann will focus on the urban development of both Enniskillen and Omagh, planning and will look into a burning issue for Enniskillen motorists.
“There’s a disproportionate number of parking tickets issued here and I will be investigating why. I have actually been to Enniskillen recently and that was one of the key issues highlighted to me.”
