VETERAN head of department at the Town Hall, Robert Gibson has conducted his first official full council meeting this week as acting chief executive.

From Saturday last, Mr Gibson (58), assumed the role of acting chief executive of the council, thereby releasing Brendan Hegarty, the outgoing chief executive, to concentrate on his new responsibilities as chief executive designate of the new Fermanagh and Omagh District.

Under the reform of local government, Fermanagh council will cease to exist on 1 April 2015, with the new 40-member council for Fermanagh and Omagh assuming full authority of existing and additional council functions.

Mr. Gibson, pictured, will remain in post until 31 March 2015. He is the council’s Director of Leisure, Development and Arts.

Married to Cathy (Dickie), he is the father of four, Kelly, Laura, Lyndsey and Rory and lives in Enniskillen, on Cherry Island.

In his new role, he will be in charge of 350 employees, including seasonal personnel.

He told the Herald Mr Hegarty would be a hard act to follow.

“It is a challenging post, and I am very honoured.”

But, he said he was assured by the quality of the workforce within the council, and the loyalty of its 23 elected representatives.

“Between the two, the council always works for the betterment of county Fermanagh.”

Mr Gibson has been a Townhall employee for 14 years. Prior to that, he was employed as a civil engineer with W.H.Elliott, Tempo.

He is a former captain of Enniskillen Rugby Club.
