IT’S the ultimate symbol of wealth.
And you could be in close reach of joining the elite ranks of super rich celebrities who own a private island including Richard Branson, Johnny Depp or Celine Dion, after the price of Inisliroo Island on the Upper Lough Erne was slashed from £500,000 to £250,000.
It may not be the Caribbean, but it’s a slice of one of Fermanagh’s most famous assets.
Dreams of living an isolated life enclosed by the shores of the Lough Erne have never seemed so near after the asking price was halved two years after it first went on the market.
The island, which is situated just 500 yards from Kockninny Pier in Derrylin, has full planning permission for a new family dwelling, its own private jetty to access the island and is being promoted, understandably, as the “perfect hideaway”.
The island is owned by Enniskillen man Noel Cox, who owns a number of local supermarkets.
Mr Cox bought the island some eight year ago and has carried out a number of refurbishments in recent years.
For those who don’t want to live a completely simple and reclusive life, the island does have mains water, a phone line and many original features such as a startomatic electric generator.
Planning has been approved for a 2,000 square foot detached home.
Mr Cox uncovered some unique facts about the previous owners of the island who had an orchard from which they harvested enough fruit for an income.
The Maguire family had to utilise the whole island and fully provide for themselves from the orchard which is still on the island with apple, damson and plum trees and after the second World War, the island became famous for its fruit production
Inisliroo is one of 365 islands on Lough Erne and covers approximately 18 acres of land.
The new owners can avail of the vast outdoor pursuits, including water skiing, wake boarding and canoeing while you can pursue a love or new found hobby of angling while perched on your private island while enjoying the array of ‘breathtaking’ wildlife.
