Enniskillen overcame a tricky away day test to record a bonus point victory against Strabane on Saturday, their second win in as many weeks.

The five try victory pleased Skins captain Ricky Connor, especially considering the side’s lengthy injury list.

“We have lost a few boys like Robbie Murray, along with Jamie Johnston and Steven Fox through injury and we lost David Buchanan this week, but this has given boys like Daniel Allister a chance and these guys have done really well.

“It means a lot to these boys coming in and playing for the 1st XV at their local club and it certainly has helped develop our squad.”

After a difficult spell over the last month, which involved three straight defeats, Skins have turned a corner and Ricky has noticed a difference in the way the team is playing.

“We’re playing honest rugby with a smile on our faces and I know myself I am enjoying playing with this team and we are enjoying our rugby.”

Skins scored five tries on Saturday in a resounding away performance. The tries came from Gavin Warrington, debutant second-row Richard Willis, Jack Harte, Jason Wilson and Donagh O’Callaghan, who contributed 19 points in total, including two penalties and four conversions.

“To go to Strabane, which is a horrible place to play and get a bonus point was great. They have one of the best scrums in the league and put Bangor to the sword in that area earlier in the year. We held them there and outplayed them around the pitch.

“Alan Wilkinson had another great game at 10, it wasn’t as free-flowing as last week, but he put us in the right areas. It was a slightly more scrappy game, but we took our chances when they came our way.”

With players including flanker Karl Egan and props Felix Quigley and Steven Fox making their way back to full-fitness Ricky is concentrating now on continuing their good form into the new year in both the league and the Towns Cup.

“We want to go as far as we can in the cup. At Enniskillen we pride ourselves on our cup rugby performances, but we’re not giving up on the league either. We’re targeting a top three spot. It will be hard, but I believe it is possible.”

In the 1st round of the Towns Cup Enniskillen have been handed a bye. The 1st XV are not in action this weekend, but both the 2nd and 3rd XV have home games against Portadown at Mullaghmeen.
