NEXT Monday night, local country music fans are in for a treat. That’s because Robert Mizzell – along with his band, ‘The Country Kings’ – will perform in the Enniskillen Hotel.
Robert has released nine solo albums, and a full-length DVD to date.
He is a popular figure across the island, and his name regularly passes the lips of local county music musicians and fans alike.
Born in Louisiana, Robert’s early musical influences came from his parents who both performed in a church group.
And, speaking to Country and Western Focus this week, Robert was looking forward to the dance.
“I’m an American – we do a lot of American style music. I try do an energetic show where we try to keep the floor full.”
After military service, Robert moved to Ireland – around 20 years ago – to fulfil ambitions of a country music career.
‘Kick Ass Country’ was his first major hit, but it was ‘Say You Love Me’ that made a real impact.
Other hits include ‘Mama Courtney’, ‘Louisiana Saturday Night’, ‘Cajun Dance’, ‘Papa Loved Mama’ and ‘Wham Bam’.
“We’ve done the Ardhowen, which we’ve sold out over the last three or four years, so I’m hoping for a big turnout on Monday night.”
Asked what he knew of the local country music scene, Robert said: “I know Anthony (McBrien), Shaun Loughrey – and I’d be quite close to them.
“I’ve been very much involved – it’s a thriving industry. Its a social outlet, good exercise and in the North people love it.”
On October 7, doors open at 9.30pm in the Enniskillen Hotel, with dancing starting at 10.30pm.
