THE Quinn Group this week strongly refuted an anonymous claim that its employees’ lives were in danger when part of the roof at the cement plant in Derrylin collapsed.

The complaint was made in an unsigned letter posted this week to the Anglo-Quinn blogspot.

It alleged: “It is only by good fortune that no one was injured or even worse, killed as a result of the collapse of the roof.

“This clearly demonstrates their complete lack of knowledge in the business.”

The incident referred to occurred about a month ago and, at the time, the company publicly acknowledged the cement clinker shed roof collapse.

However, the letter claimed that the repairs had still to be carried out, and said the decision to postpone the remedial works was based on cost and unnecessary spend.

Yesterday, a company spokesman told the Herald the work was ‘down for repairs’, and that it would be done.

“There is a hole in the roof. There is no big deal about it, but what we want to stress is there was nobody working underneath it at the time. It’s only a clinker shed.”

The letter made various other claims, but the company spokesman said it had a problem with anonymous letters.

“For starters, they can say what they like, and if we give them any credence, you start getting them every week.

“But, we felt we had to nail this claim about the risk, as they’re claiming, to employees from the roof collapse. There were no lives endangered.”

And, he felt he had to respond to one other claim that management had ‘done up’ the plant and grounds for a visit by directors.

“Yes, we had a board meeting last Friday. They’re held in different locations every month, and last Thursday night we refreshed the signs all over the place for the meeting.”

The spokesman reported business as, ‘going fine’.
