It’s not just activists, scientists and the politicians who are talking about fracking in Fermanagh – one Queen’s University student is basing his entire university dissertation on it!
David McLeod from Armagh is a 20-year-old final year Geography student and as past of his degree he was tasked to conduct a significant research project. He chose to focus on the social, economic and environmental impacts of fracking in Fermanagh.
“I choose this topic partly as it allows me to gain some experience in the social, physical and environmental sciences that provide the building blocks to a Geography degree, but primarily, as fracking in Northern Ireland is a relatively unknown technology, it offers me the change to present some new and useful statistics, a clear assessment and an unbiased analysis of some of the main concerns and claims that are associated with fracking in the area, so that an informed decision can be made.
Public opinion is a crucial element of the research and I am very grateful for the response the people of Fermanagh have given me to date, this has proved invaluable.”
And what have the people of Fermanagh had to say about fracking in their back yard? As David explained there are numerous concerns.
“At this early stage the feedback has shown that many are concerned about environmental risks citing the value they place on the areas natural beauty. Others see a need for economic investment and are excited about the job opportunities, but nearly all are interested in finding out more from the relevant bodies and representatives.”
Despite his findings thus far David will not cast his own verdict on the controversial drilling process just yet.
“It is important that I remain unbiased and hope that the end result of my work reflects this and can provide a useful consultation to anyone interested or undecided.”
