ENNISKILLEN has beaten Galway city and Tralee to be named best kept large urban centre in Ireland.

The county town came out top in Ireland’s best kept town competition, an all-Ireland initiative between the amenity council, the DOE and local government.

To recognise the town’s success the Council are proposing to erect an archway in Enniskillen over the New Street access to Inis Ceithleann and a Rowan tree has been planted in the grounds of Ardhowen Theatre.

A chairman’s reception to pay tribute to the efforts of individuals and organisations that helped Enniskillen win the title of Ireland’s best large urban centre was held at the Ardhowen Theatre, last Wednesday.

Enniskillen secured its place in the finals of the Ireland’s Best Kept Towns competition after winning the Northern Ireland Amenity Council’s ‘Best Kept Large Town’ award in November 2012.

Speaking at the reception, Chairman of Fermanagh District Council, Councillor Alex Baird, said:

‘Enniskillen winning the all-Ireland Best Kept title for a sixth time is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work, commitment and partnership working between Fermanagh District Council, residents, businesses and partner agencies.’

Guest speakers at the Chairman’s Reception included Dr Mark Hammond, representing the Minister for the Department of the Environment and Miss Doreen Muskett MBE, President of the Northern Ireland Amenity Council.

A Rowan tree was planted in the grounds of the Ardhowen Theatre after the reception in recognition of Enniskillen winning the award and the efforts of local people and organisations.

The Council has also proposed to erect an archway in Enniskillen over the New Street access from East Bridge to Inis Ceithleann as a permanent legacy of Enniskillen’s success in the Ireland’s Best Kept Towns competition. The erection of the archway is subject to planning approval and the availability of match funding.

The 2013 all-Ireland award is the sixth time Enniskillen has won the coveted ‘Best Kept’ title, firmly establishing it as one of Ireland’s most attractive towns.
