A LOCAL councillor has said she is ‘guilty’ of using ‘silly string’ herself, as her fellow councillor attempts to ban the party product.
Independent councillor, Bernice Swift, was responding to the news that DUP councillor, Bert Johnston, has proposed a motion calling for the banning of the substance at Monday’s council meeting.
The motion reads: “This Council calls on the Environment Minister to ban the sale of the messy and environmentally unfriendly product known as Silly String and any other product similar to it because of the mess it makes at Festivals, Twelfths and celebratory gatherings in town and village centres.
This Council requests that the Minister gives serious consideration to banning the sale of this product anywhere in Northern Ireland and used his ministerial influence to have it banned further afield.”
And, Cllr Swift said: “I actually enjoy ‘silly string’, it’s always great fun at surprise parties and I’m guilty of using it many times at the same!”
She added: “I have never considered it to be a serious environmental risk whatsoever, silly string certainly couldn’t be equated to the big environmental issue of Fracking in need of address with the Environment Minister. I wouldn’t consider banning the sale of silly string.”
The motion is due to be debated at Monday’s meeting of Fermanagh District Council.
