THERE has been a general welcome for a £260,000 ‘twin’ road improvement scheme affecting the Derrylin Road and Derrylin itself.

This week, the Roads Minister Danny Kennedy has announced the start dates for the schemes, on the A509 Enniskillen to Derrylin Road, which also serves as the county’s main road to Dublin.

The first, costing £130,000, starts from the roundabout at Drumgallon on A4 Sligo Road and extends to the junction of Old Rossorry Road.

The preparation work is due to begin on Monday 8 July, and will continue for two weeks. During this period, the road will remain open and traffic control will be in operation.

However, the main resurfacing work will require the road to be closed for a period of one week starting on Monday, 22 July.

Signed traffic diversions will be in operation for this period.

The second scheme, also costing £130,000, involves resurfacing of the carriageway at Main Street, Derrylin from the mini roundabout at the Ballyconnell Road to the public toilets, a distance of 500m.

The preparation work on this scheme starts on Monday 22 July and will continue for one week. During this period, the road will remain open and traffic control measures will be in operation.

But, here again, the main resurfacing work will require the road to be closed at night from 7pm to 7am from Monday, 29 July to Tuesday, 1 August, inclusive, and from Monday, 5 August to Thursday, 8 August, inclusive.

Derrylin-based architect, Donal McPhillips told the Herald that the Derrylin main street scheme was ‘badly needed’.

“Over the years, the road surface has deteriorated. There is constant traffic on it from the south, from early morning to late afternoon. It is the main thoroughfare for people heading into Enniskillen.

“We have had all the bad news, with the Quinn business, and so on, so certainly any news to do with the upkeep and the regeneration of the village is very welcome.”

Mr McPhillips is now hoping that Roads Service will consider erecting a footpath from the A509 out the Sheetrim road to the GAA pitch.

Meanwhile, the Minister, Danny Kennedy said Roads Service had carefully programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements in order to minimise any inconvenience to the public.

“However, road users should be aware that some delays are to be expected, so they should allow additional time when planning any journeys.”
