HOT on the heels of the announcement of a new £1.5m library for Lisnaskea, £220,000 is to be invested in a road improvement scheme for the Main Street.

The work involves resurfacing the carriageway along with drainage and footway improvements from the roundabout at Drumhaw to the mini-roundabout at the junction with B127 Water Street/Castle Lane.

Local UUP MLA Tom Elliot was one of the first to welcome the announcement made by DRD Minister Danny Kennedy.

“It’s vitally important that our local towns are able to cope with traffic in an effective manner as, due to the rural nature of our area and lack of a train network, we rely heavily on good road infrastructure in order to facilitate the movement of various goods and machinery, as well as regular traffic.”

His thoughts were echoed by party councillor Harold Andrews who added:

“This will undoubtedly help the traffic flow and also lift the appearance of the town, which can only be a good thing as we continue actively market Lisnaskea and the surrounding area as a place for tourists to visit.”

Sinn Fein  Erne East Councillor Ruth Lynch welcomed the announcement, but said it was long overdue.

“My colleagues and I have lobbied very hard to secure this programme of works and will continue to put pressure on the relevant bodies to ensure that the whole of Main Street is brought up to the standards required and expected by local users.

“Lisnaskea is the second largest town in Fermanagh and the surface as it currently exists is completely unacceptable, our towns and villages are in desperate need of investment to bring infrastructure such as roads up to an acceptable standard.”

Work will begin on Monday August 5 2013. The preparatory work involving the laying of new drainage, kerbing and footway resurfacing will take approximately five weeks after which the carriageway will be resurfaced in asphalt.
It is envisaged the entire scheme should be completed within seven weeks.

Roads Service has carefully programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements in order to minimise any inconvenience to the public, however road users should be aware that some delays are to be expected and should allow additional time when planning any journeys.
