A group, comprising parents, members of the school’s board of governors and teaching staff, set up to resist the amalgamation of the Collegiate Grammar School with Portora Royal School, met in the school this week for an update report.

Its spokesman, Ruth Makhlouf explained that the get-together was called to provide the members with feedback from the Western Education and Library Board from its last meeting.

“We informed the meeting that the consultation that the Board has promised, with the parents, will now take place in September and not at the end of June.

“We are against amalgamation, but we don’t want people to think it’s the school that’s pushing this.

“It’s our action group that’s taking the lead, and we’re made up of teachers, members of the board of governors and, of course, parents.”

She went on: “We are prepared to take a long-term stand, and we will do everything within our power to be allowed to continue as an all-girls’ grammar school.

“We maintain we have two good grammar schools, the Collegiate and Portora, and a very good comprehensive school, Devenish College.

“The proposal is to locate the two grammar schools on the one (Portora) hill and build a new school for Devenish College that was promised 10 years ago.

“What we are saying is we have a good mostly all boys’ schools (girls are accepted at AS and A Level), and a very good all girls’ grammar schools, so let them build a new school for Devenish College.
