Yesterday, Tuesday, tributes came in many forms for the 19-year-old, a former pupil of St Paul’s Primary School, and St Mary’s College in Irvinestown.

Mary Donnelly, who taught Owen during his time at St Mary’s College, paid tribute a popular young man who ‘always had a smile on his face’.

Mary was also co-ordinator for the John Paul II awards, in which Owen recently took part.

“He was very popular among his peers,” said Mary, “he’d a wee smiley face – always had a wee jokey comment. He was a character, Owen was a character.

“When he arrived at the John Paul ll awards, he was absolutely great,” continued Mary.

“He attended every meeting, he was absolutely brilliant.

“He did a collection many Sundays at Mass, and he was great at cleaning the church – he cleaned it and the graveyard. That was at his local church, Sacred Heart in Irvinestown,” Mary continued.

“There was a neighbour of his who he used to put out her bins, and help her in the garden and he had written in his John Paul ll report that he was good at woodwork and would have helped her fix doors and the like.

“Our thoughts go out to his family and all his friends,” she concluded.

SDLP Councillor, John O’ Kane, also offered his condolences.

“They are a very well-known family, and a well-respected family who have lived here for many years,” he said.

“It is extremely sad and my sympathies go out to the family and the wider family circle.

“It’s an absolute shock to the community.”

Owen is survived by his parents, Terence and Christine, and his siblings, Christopher, Megan, Luke, Turlough, and Shea.

The funeral will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at the Sacred Heart Church in Irvinestown at 11am. The funeral director is Jim Barnett, Irvinestown.
