MONAGHAN politician Heather Humphreys, who hails from close to the Fermanagh border, will not be in the running to replace President Michael D Higgins when Ireland goes to the polls in a presidential election later this year.
The Drum woman, who served in the Fine Gael cabinet as a minister for over ten years and is a former deputy leader of the party, had been pitched as a potential successor to the much-loved President Higgins. However, last week she ruled herself out of the race.
Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show on Northern Sound last week, she said while she had given it serious consideration, she did not plan to put herself forward for a nomination. Instead, she said she would like to spend time with family and doing other things.
