Ballyreagh Silver Band celebrates 150 years of music!

IN A world where musical trends come and go, few ensembles can claim the longevity and legacy of Ballyreagh Silver Band that has been captivating audiences for an impressive 150 years.
This remarkable milestone not only highlights the band’s enduring appeal but also reflects the rich cultural heritage and community spirit that have been woven into its very fabric.
Among the many talented musicians in this esteemed silver band, one member truly stands out for their incredible dedication and longevity.
With over 70 years of service, Cecil Armstrong has enjoyed every moment of being in the band, even if it included getting wet.
“My favourite memory of the band is the first parade I was out on in the early 50s and it was in the Moy demonstration at a last Saturday. It was a very rainy day, but it didn’t matter when you were in the band, you always enjoyed it,” Cecil told the ‘Herald.
“I like the comradeship of everybody, we get on very well and its a weekly event as far as I’m concerned. I enjoy the music. I am proud to be a member as long as I have been,” he added.
The Ballyreagh Band Hall, located between Garvery and Tempo, was originally constructed in the 1880s as a creamery for local farmers. However, since 1947, it has served as the home of Ballyreagh. In 2012, the hall underwent significant renovations, including a complete re-roofing.
William Edwards has also dedicated many years to the band. He received his first cornet as a Christmas present in 1958.
“I enjoy the outings, there is a whole lot of memories. I have enjoyed every minute of the band, both band practice and outings,” said William.
“It is great that the band has survived for 150 years. I had been talking to old people whenever I was a cub and they were able to tell me the band never stopped in the whole time and it has never stopped in my memory either only for Covid, but other than that, it kept going all the time.”
Mother and daughter duo Sarah and Charlotte Coalter have been enjoying playing in the band together.
“I joined Ballyreagh band in October 1998 and Charlotte joined in September last year. I took time out after having Charlotte and came back in September as well,” explained Sarah.
“The band actually played at my wedding in 2012 so that’s a big memory and just all the outings since I was 12 until now.”
“It is just lovely being part of a group. I was probably nervous coming back after being away for so long but its just like you have never left its just a big old family,” she said.
“I enjoy everything about being in the band,” said Charlotte.
To Robin Emerson, Ballyreagh Siver Band is also “like a family” and something he is proud to be a part of.
“I joined the band in 1958, however long ago that is. I have never counted it, I was 10 years old,” Robin laughed.
