Enniskillen woman takes up new role with Cancer Focus

WITH plans well underway for the North’s first therapeutic cancer support centre in Enniskillen, the charity behind the centre has appointed a well-known local woman as its new fundraising manager for the local area.

Krystle Corrigan was named Cancer Focus NI’s Enniskillen and Fermanagh fundraising events officer last month, and she certainly hit the ground running, taking charge of the charity’s Big Bucket Collection shortly after beginning her new role.

It was hopefully a taste of things to come, with the people of Fermanagh digging deep.

“Enniskillen was the top in Northern Ireland for raising money for that day,” Krystle.

“I said to them in head office in Belfast, you’ll not meet any nicer people than Fermanagh people. They’re so good and they’re so forthcoming, and if they can’t give they’ll offer help.

“I was delighted with it because it was my first campaign.”

A special needs classroom assistant for the previous ten years at St Joseph’s College, Krystal explained how she had ended up de facto fundraiser at the school due to her passion for organising events.

She also had a personal connection to cancer, and experience of the lack of facilities in Fermanagh, as her aunt sadly passed away from the disease a few years ago.

“I just thought, it’s a great opportunity, and we definitely need more support in this area so I would really love to go for it,” she said.

While she may be working remotely, especially at the moment ahead of the opening of the new centre, Krystle said she is getting great support from head office in Belfast. She is passionate about the work the charity is doing.

“I want to get more events and campaigns around the area to show how much the charity can do for everyone,” she said. “It’s about getting the awareness out to show there’s more support for people.”

Krystle added, “There are lots of other cancer charities in this area too, that are all brilliant, and I’d like to think we can all work together.”

With Cancer Focus the chosen charity for this year’s local Twelfth celebrations, the fundraising will be continuing in the months ahead, with Krystle hard at work organising a Cuilcagh boardwalk walk for September 21, as well as making sure there is plenty of Fermanagh representation at the Big Pink Run on October 13 in Belfast.
