Benaughlin neon sign lights up the Fermanagh border

A BORDER community in Fermanagh has been given a Hollywood-style makeover as part of a pioneering arts project, with a huge neon sign lighting up Benaughlin Mountain this week.
Part of the ‘Anything to Declare’ border arts initiative, the huge eight-feet-high, 19-feet-wide installation on the border between Fermanagh and Cavan was illuminated on Monday of this week and will remain alight until July 27.
Described as “a super charged piece of public art waiting to ignite conversation,” the installation was the brain-child of programme director Dylan Quinn, was crafted by Neon Workshops, and was constructed by Jon Kelly. It was created over three months and each letter was handmade with a special reinforced glass.
“The Anything to Declare installation invites you to engage in a conversation,” said a spokeswoman for the project.
“To talk about, how we talk about the border. A place that communities across this region have known for decades.
“It acts as a highlighter within our landscape to encourage healthy and open discussion about how we talk about it’s past, present and its future.”
For anyone hoping to catch a view of the stunning sign, parking is available on the A32, with entry through private land and ‘light touch signage’ to guide you to the installation.
The Anything to Declare project has commissioned four artists to present five complimentary or unique pieces of work along our local border communities.
The programme concludes with three bookable experiences next week in Swanlinbar on July 25, 26 and 27.
The border village will be brought to life with an interactive collection of contemporary art events including music, dance, and moving image. Audiences will be invited to engage in the conversation about the place known as ‘the border’.
