War memorial unveiled in Lisbellaw

A WAR memorial has been erected in Lisbellaw dedicated to the men and women of the area who lost their lives in two world wars.
The memorial was erected by The Lisbellaw Veterans Group which was formed in 2015 by veterans within the local area who had served in the armed forces, such as the Army, The Royal Air Force and The Royal Navy.
“During our time we have lost some good friends from the group due to mental health, PTSD and other illness’s, which can be due to service.
“Being able to talk to one another is the starting point for any recovery, which we can help and support one another with,” said group chairman Derek Moutray.
Since the group formed in 2015 their long-term goal was to have a War Memorial in the village of Lisbellaw, something they thought would never happen in their day.
The unveiling of the memorial took place on Sunday 16 June by Samuel Carrothers who was the nephew of Lieutenant John Samuel Carrothers, whose name is on the war memorial.
“This Memorial will be there for years to come and to be seen by everyone.
“The children within the community can learn from this and help to encourage them to work together for a future where the sacrifices of the past were not made in vain, whilst also remember the significance of history and importance of maintaining peace going forward,” Derek explained.
“The War Memorial includes 74 names from the Lisbellaw area. A lot of research was done to obtain these names and there may be more names to be found yet, which can be added onto the memorial as time goes on.
“The community of Lisbellaw area now has a permanent memorial where Family members and relatives can come and reflect on times gone by and remember the fallen.”
