Dozens of abandoned dogs put down by council

Lacey the dog has found a new home thanks to the work of the Brook Veterinary Clinic and Bright Eyes Animal Sanctuary

OVER the past eight months, 24 stray and abandoned dogs have been put down throughout the Council District.
New figures reveal that the Fermanagh and Omagh District has the highest number of stray dogs which were put to sleep in the North, joint with Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough.
In one eight month period from April 2017 until December 2017, there were 450 complaints in total across the District, and 179 of those dogs were impounded while 72 dogs were seized and returned to their owners.
Figures just released detailed that 104 dogs were unclaimed and passed on to shelters in the District, while eight dogs were unclaimed and sold to members of the public.
A total of 61 stray dogs were micro-chipped before they were seized and returned to their owner, but 98 dogs that were micro-chipped before they were seized were not so lucky and had to be impounded.
In September last year, the Herald reported that between July 2016, and June 2017, 94 stray dogs were humanely destroyed.
While the number of dogs put down has decreased, Local vet, Maeve Lunny of The Brook Veterinary Clinic told the Herald that education for animal owners is crucial to the welfare and health of dogs in the area.
“Educating prospective owners and responsible pet ownership is the most important way to avoid welfare issues.
“The aim of all concerned is that no healthy dog should be euthanased,” she said.
Stray and unwanted dogs are available for re-homing directly from the Council’s Dog Pound for a small re-homing fee.
