THE life of the most senior bell-ringer of St Macartin’s Cathedral in Enniskillen, Stewart Scott was celebrated on Saturday.
The late Mr Scott passed away peacefully at his home in Trasna Park, Enniskillen on Wednesday last after a long illness. He was a bell-ringer at the Cathedral for 66 years and as well as leading the faithful band of bell-ringers.
Bell-ringers from Belfast and other parts of the North joined those from St Macartin’s as a peal of ten bells rang out across the town as his funeral was held at the Cathedral on Saturday afternoon. It was an emotional occasion for all present including his family as his brother Nelson, son Geoff and daughter Barbara were also bell-ringers.
The bell-ringing tribute to Stewart was also the theme of the funeral address by Dean Kenneth Hall. He explained how many people in Enniskillen and its community have been blessed by Stewart’s ringing of the bells forover 60 years. As a life-time member of the Irish Association of Change Ringers, Stewart had rung in all the bell towers in the North, as well as some in the Republic, England and Scotland.
Described as “a gentleman of a very quiet disposition”, Dean Hall told the congregation at the funeral that he had the privilege of asking Stewart to lead the bell-ringing to welcome Queen Elizabeth for her Diamond Jubilee Service in St Macartin’s Cathedral in June 2012.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, children Barbara and Geoff, son and daughters-in-law Michael, Caroline and Alison, grandchildren Catherine, Evie, Emma and Clara and siblings Nelson and Ethel. He was predeceased by his son, Trevor and brother Joe. Mr Scott’s funeral service was followed by burial in Rossorry Parish Churchyard.
