Warning as BT scams ‘linked to local numbers’

SCam

SEVERAL people across the county have reportedly been subject to bogus callers from people claiming to be from BT.

On Monday morning, a woman answered the phone to a person who said they were from BT Outreach and that someone was using her Wifi.
The number in which the call came from appeared to be from a local number – but these numbers belong to people who are not involved with the scam.
The woman who wished to remain anonymous said, “The person who rang was hard to make out at times, and asked me if I could turn on my computer. I said I didn’t have a computer and they asked if I had a laptop. When I said no and told them if there was a problem I would check it myself and phone BT back, they then hung up.
“When I checked the number on 1471, a local number came up. I phoned it several times and it was constantly busy. I have reported the call to BT and the police.”
A post on the Enniskillen family, friends and neighbours Facebook page has also attracted comments from several other people who received similar bogus calls recently.
A spokesperson from BT has advised,
“BT would suggest that any consumers suspicious regarding these calls should seek advice at the following BT web page  http://btplc.com/Inclusion/ProductsAndServices/Scams/index.htm which provides further information to help you keep your valuable information safe and to stop fraudsters getting access to it.
If you have a concern about the validity of calls of this nature, members of the public should also contact 0800 321999 to validate the identity of the caller.”
A spokesman for Fermanagh PSNI said, “We have been made aware of an ongoing telephone scam in the Fermanagh area. The caller claims to be from BT – they are not. While BT may contact you for lawful business purposes please be especially careful to check their credentials before divulging any information. If you have Caller ID you might notice that the number APPEARS to be a local one.
These matters are currently under investigation. If you receive one of those calls please be vigilant and remember that you can make a report online through www.actionfraud.police.uk or by ringing 0300 123 2040.”
