FANS of the ‘Old Enniskillen’ Facebook page have paid tribute to its founder Benny Cassidy after he confirmed this week that he is calling time on his Internet sensation.
The social media page was set up in February 2016 to offer Fermanagh users a nostalgic trip down memory lane. In that short time it has proved hugely popular, gaining over 16,000 likes in 45 countries.
Mr Cassidy’s own keen interest in local history helped inspire the ‘Old Enniskillen’ page as he had previously been putting up old photographs on his personal Facebook page. When he soon noticed that he was getting a lot of comments and feedback, he decided to create a page devoted to Enniskillen and said the subsequent reaction had made it all worthwhile. The page regularly attracted interest in countries as far away as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Swaziland, Saudi Arabia and the USA.
But Mr Cassidy revealed this week that he believes he has now taken his popular venture as far as he can.
In a message on the popular page, he wrote: “I want to thank everyone who joined me on my Old Enniskillen page trip but sadly I won’t be adding to it, not because I’ve lost my enthusiasm or love for it but because I believe I’ve scoped as much as I possibly can with the help of so many others.
“Between us we’ve collected many thousands of beautiful and precious photos and articles and hopefully the page has served its purpose in breathing life into the yesteryears of Enniskillen.”
He added that the contributions from those who commented under his regular posts and stirred up old memories had truly brought his photos to life.
“I want to thank everyone right across the globe who watched, contributed, liked posts or shared the page and a huge thanks to those that hosted screen nights for my slideshows.”
However after seeing how much everyone appreciates ‘Old Enniskillen’, Mr Cassidy has decided that whilst he will be moving back from contributing, the page will remain on Facebook to allow everyone to continue to view past photos and contributions.
