Michelle Gildernew has made a direct appeal to SDLP voters in Fermanagh and South Tyrone to ‘please lend me your vote in this election’.
Weeks of behind the scenes efforts to secure an agreement between Sinn Féin and the SDLP failed when the former appeared to rule out a non-party aligned independent anti-Brexit candidate and the latter refused to stand aside in Fermanagh and South Tyrone.
Speaking on Tuesday ahead of Mary Garrity’s nomination for the SDLP on Thursday, Michelle Gildernew said she would have been in favour of “a strong anti-Brexit alliance” with the Greens, Alliance, and the SDLP.
“That didn’t happen,” she said.
“I don’t know if there’s any point appealing to the SDLP directly, so I’m going to appeal to their voters, also to those Green Party and Alliance Party voters, people who have a strong loyalty to another party, who know in this election it’s between me and Tom Elliott.”
