Council spends a staggering £1.7m on street cleaning

During 2015 and 2016, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council spent a staggering £1.7 million on street cleaning and litter. The Council also spent £6,000 cleaning up fly tipping throughout the county.
Across the north, Councils spent over £43 million cleaning our streets and open spaces in 2015-16. This figure has increased by 8% on the previous year. This is a financial burden to ratepayers and this money could be spent on other much needed facilities.
In an attempt to combat the littering problem, ‘Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful’ is asking community groups and individuals from all over Northern Ireland to register to take part in the BIG Spring Clean by organising a local clean up.
Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful BIG Spring Clean brings a focus on litter during the month of April, enabling businesses, schools, community groups and individuals to unite in the common cause to clean up and show that we live here and we love here.
Jemma Dolan, Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA took to the streets to get involved in the clean up and encourages everyone to get involved.
“I commend the work of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in their attempts to keep the council area clean and tidy. However, dropping litter, chewing gum, cigarette butts and dog fouling remain a constant problem across the county and not only ruining our communities and our landscapes but also can result in fines of up to £200. Fermanagh is one of the most beautiful counties in Ireland – we need to treat it and appreciate it as it deserves.”
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council also encourages groups to separate and recycle rubbish were possible.
Different coloured bags will be provided for the separation of recyclable material.
If you would like to participate in cleaning up your area, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council can help by supplying litter pickers, hi vis vests and bags as well as by collecting bags of rubbish after an event. To arrange a litter pick please contact Anthea Owens, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council on 0300 303 1777 or email anthea.owens@fermanaghomagh.com.
