An Enniskillen man who rang 999 over multiple times in one night and verbally abused staff, has been sentenced to two months in custody.
Liam Wilson (45), of Corban Avenue, Enniskillen appeared before Monday’s sitting of Enniskillen Magistrates Court via video-link from Maghaberry Person charged with persistently using a public electronic communications network and causing annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety to others.
The court heard that on October 10th 2015 police attended Wilson’s home due to concerns for his well-being as he had been calling 999. On arrival, officers spent 45 minutes trying to gain access to the property and they could see Wilson inside standing at the window looking out while on the phone. It emerged that Wilson had rung the emergency services 13 times over a 44 minute period and was extremely abuse to staff on the 999 line.
Defence barrister Steffan Rafferty said an underlying issue in the incident was the downward spiral of the defendant’s mental health.
“The calls he made were very much akin to a cry for help,” he said.
District Judge Nigel Broderick observed: “When police arrived at his door he continued with the calls and didn’t let them in. You would think that he would have let them in.”
