BOTH the DUP and Sinn Fein are expecting to be celebrating by the end of today, as counting for the Fermanagh South Tyrone constituency gets underway in earnest at the Omagh Leisure Complex.
While we are not expecting any official results until mid-late afternoon, unofficial tallies are indicating a strong showing for Fermanagh’s two biggest parties. DUP leader Arlene Foster is expected to once again top the poll, however SF’s Michelle Gildernew could give her a run for her money. However, there are rumours the UUP’s Rosemary Barton may be hoping to steal a seat away from the party’s unionist rivals.
The Alliance’s Noreen Campbell has increased the vote for the party in FST, however it appears to have come at the expense of Labour’s Donal O’Cofaigh and the Green Party’s Tanya Jones.
The SDLP’s Richie McPhillips could be today’s biggest loser, with the party’s vote so far looking weak. With one less seat in the constituency, it’s not (currently) looking like he will relive the drama of last year, when he pipped SF to the last FST seat.
It should be noted, there have been no official results yet, and all current predictions are based on unofficial estimates.
