AS we enter into Daylight Savings Time (DST), with the clocks going forward in the early hours of tomorrow morning (Sunday, March 26), police have issued a warning to the public to “change your clocks and check your locks.”
As the days stretch out and the evenings brighten, the PSNI is urging the public to to check their properties are properly secured against burglars. Superintendent Simon Walls warned people to check their locks, not only on your homes, but on outbuildings, sheds, garages and other parts of your home and to safeguard any valuable equipment.
“Make sure your home is secure. Lock doors and windows. Never leave a garage or garden shed unlocked. Keep your valuables stored away safely, and never leave them where they can be seen through windows,” said Supt Walls. “I would encourage everyone to take some practical steps to protect your home and belongings.”
To protect your property, police advise the following:
-
Ensure gardening tools are locked away after use
-
Don’t leave cash or valuable items on display
-
Never leave keys in the locks, on table tops or hooks in view of external windows
-
Report suspicious persons or vehicles to police
-
Consider fitting an alarm or other security devices
Supt Walls added: “A proportion of all burglaries occur at unsecured premises through unlocked doors or windows. If your doors aren’t secure, neither is your house.”
