A MECHANIC has been fined and banned from driving for one month after police detected him driving his father’s car uninsured.
Christopher Corry (20) of Drumlyon Drive in Enniskillen pleaded guilty when he appeared before Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday charged with having no insurance or test certificate.
The court heard that at 11pm on August 26th, police on patrol in Enniskillen observed a red Vauxhall Corsa coming towards them at speed and being driven by the defendant, who was the only occupant. The car then turned around and headed off in the direction of Tempo. Half an hour later, the same car was detected at the Cherrymount Link Road and stopped.
Police spoke to Corry who told them the car he was driving belonged to his father and that he was driving it ho after having it repaired. Corry added that he believed that his third party insurance policy covered him to drive the car. Further police enquires confirmed that this was not the case and Corry was cautioned.
Corry, a mechanic who represented himself at this week’s hearing, told the court that the car was now off the road. He added that his licence was very important to him, given the nature of his job.
District Judge Nigel Broderick agreed to exercise his discretion on this occasion by imposing a short disqualification after hearing that Corry already has nine penalty points on his licence.
For having no insurance, Corry was fined £300 and a further £75 for having no vehicle test certificate. A one month driving disqualification was also imposed.
