A NEW information point and support service for anyone with questions about cancer has been officially opened at the South West Acute Hospital.
Macmillan Cancer Support, in partnership with the Western Trust, has launched this new service which provides a friendly environment for patients, carers and anyone affected by cancer to access good quality, comprehensive and appropriate information and support. A wide-range of Macmillan booklets are available, dealing with everything from managing symptoms to advice on benefits and financial support.
The Health Minister Michelle O’Neill officially opened the new SWAH facility on a visit to Enniskillen last Thursday.
“I fully support this partnership working with Macmillan to enhance the experience for people living with cancer. I know how important it is to ensure cancer patients have ongoing support and are signposted to appropriate services,” she said.
According to Macmillan, over 1,200 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in the Western Trust area.
Paula Kealey, Macmillan Cancer Support Strategic Partnership Manager, said resources such as this are vitally important to anyone who has been affected by cancer.
“This is the latest information point to be opened by Macmillan in hospitals throughout Northern Ireland in a bid to ensure that no one here faces cancer alone. It’s part of a much wider network of Macmillan information services across the Western Trust area which underlines our commitment to ensuring that people right across Northern Ireland have access to the right information at the right time and in the right place,” she added.
The point is managed by the Macmillan Information and Support Manager, Martha Magee and supported by trained Trust volunteers who will man the point on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays 10 – 4pm and Fridays 10 – 1pm. No appointment is necessary; the volunteers will direct individuals to the range of information available that best addresses their needs or signpost to the relevant local supporting services.
