A woman has been knocked down and injured on Townhall Street in Enniskillen this morning. The incident happened at around 11am after a car struck the window of Boots Chemist. The woman was walking with two children when she was hit by the silver Suzuki jeep. She was among five injured in the incident involving the jeep and four pedestrians, the PSNI have confirmed.
Townhall Street was closed to traffic for a time with cars being diverted from Belmore Street onto Queen Elizabeth Road. Ambulance, police and the fire service attended the scene.
Inspector Keith Hicks said: “Police can confirm that a single vehicle has crashed through the window of a shop in the Townhall Street area of Enniskillen. At present it is believed there are six casualties. It is not believed that there are any life threatening injuries.
“Police and NIAS are currently at the scene. I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact police at Enniskillen on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 376 04/11/16.” The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service later said that five people were taken to the South West Acute Hospital after the incident.
Marie Danaswamy from Dublin was in Enniskillen for the day and witnessed the incident.
“I could see the pram being fling against the wall, and the mother could not get up. I heard the mother’s scream and she was flung against the window as she was struck by the car. I would say the baby was only about a year and a half, there is also a little girl there. I also saw a man in a wheelchair hit the floor. I do not know whether the driver took weak or if she was trying to park.”
The First Minister Arlene Foster tweeted to say she was “disturbed” to hear of the serious incident.
